I Have Pre-Existing Conditions

I don't have any coverage, and

  • I'm healthy.
  • I have pre-existing conditions.

Some pre-existing conditions are declinable conditions, and some are such that the carrier will still offer you coverage. It could be at the standard rate or at a higher level. This can be anything that has required medical attention. Generally speaking, carriers require that you be treatment- and symptom-free for the past X amount of months (up to their underwriter's discretion). In addition, smoking (anytime within the past 12 months) is a rating factor, and will most likely increase the standard rate by 20% or more. If you think you have some health issues that may not be favorable to a carrier, email us to explain your situation. We are not underwriters, but we can often find out how a specific condition will be viewed by the carrier before you go through the process of actually applying for coverage.

We ALWAYS recommend that you DO NOT cancel any coverage you may currently have until you've received approval in writing from a carrier. If it is an option for you, choose COBRA benefits over nothing at all. Medical costs can create a much more difficult situation for you than COBRA premiums.

If your health is such that you would not qualify for a traditional plan, and COBRA is not an option for you, you may be eligible for the California Major Risk Medical Insurance Program (MRMIP). Another option may be the new California Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan program. Please contact these programs directly for more information.
