I'm Losing My Group Coverage

I don't have any coverage, and

I have coverage now, but

  • I'm losing my group coverage.

If you lost coverage under your employer's plan, time is of the essence. You will most likely be eligible for COBRA and Cal-COBRA. If you miss your opportunity to apply for COBRA, you may not be able to take advantage of this option. If your health is such that you would not qualify for a traditional plan, COBRA is probably your best option. This coverage can last as long as 36 months; 18 months under COBRA and an additional 18 months under Cal-COBRA. You will normally be eligible for any plan that the current employees are offered. At the employer's OPEN ENROLLMENT period, you may change to another plan that is offered under your previous employer's group portfolio. A surcharge of 2-10% will normally be added to the cost of your premium for administrative costs. You should contact your previous plan, employer, or COBRA administrator for additional information.

If you've already received the information for COBRA, you've probably found this is a very expensive option for you. The reason for this is that now you will be required to pay the entire premium to continue your group coverage. This means that you will be paying the amount you were used to paying while you were employed PLUS the portion that your employer was chipping in each month.

How can I save money on health insurance once I lose my group coverage? If you are relatively healthy, you have many options. The best place to start is to
GET A QUOTE, select a plan and apply before the time expires for you to apply for COBRA. That way, COBRA can still be your back-up option. Also, for helpful tips, be sure to read our "Frequently Asked Questions" located on the right-hand side of this page.

  • It's too expensive.
